  • I called the embassy and left a message rambling on about deforestation ....on the answer machine. The message said "IT'S A PUBLIC HOLIDAY" (for who? Argentina? because it wasn't in the UK.... and why are they cutting dow trees on a public holiday??? I reckon the answer machine message was wrong....but why? Hmmmmm. Lisa (UK)
  • I spoke to a secretary. She said that she was not aware of the problem, Argentina needed to feed it\'s population, Europe was no longer buying sugar cane fron Argentina and Russia had not paid for it\'s wheat for quite a while so the country needed money for it\'s own people. she was very friendly, and told me that Argentina, had 10 per cent of it\'s nariural area protected by law? i told her to inquire and visit the greenpeace site on the web ¿What do you think of their response to your call?: very friendly but she had just taken shift and was unware of previous calling. Valérie Duouis (France)

¿What do you think of their response to your call?: not convinced that my concerns would be passed onto the right person, and even if they were I doubt they would find there way to Argentina. Would have more confidance if I were able to e-mail the embassy. Mark Simpson (UK)

  • ¿What did they say?: They asked if I would like/prefer to send an email rather than speak to him. I explained I just came back from the International Children\'s Conference on the Environment as my daughter represented Canada. (United Nations Event) My daughter & I met children from 73 countries & the number 1 problem seems to be deforestation. I wish to speak to him about this plight rather than email. Both Jade & I will both attempt to speak with him.
¿What do you think of their response to your call?: I hope we can convince him that we need people in these positions who are brave enough to stand up & protect the people in Argentina. We need caring compassionate leaders. I think the issue most likely will be \'downplayed\' but I will hope to reach him. I\'ve seen many photos of such deforestation & it is very frightening. I said, \'Are you sure there is nobody there that can talk to me about it?\' and she said \'I\'m sorry, you will need to send an email\'

  • I was told that the reason why Argentina is considering the destruction of this area of forest is because there is a huge rush of people coming into northern Argentina from neighboring countries, who are ill and starving. One of the main illness is the lack of intestinal flora which needs to be cured with milk products and this requires soya to feed the animals producing milk products.
There were some contradictions in her comments but generally i was told that it was due to the poverty of the area and the mass people migration into the region. She also said that if Europe bought their products then their economy would go better and they wouldn\'t need to have such drastic measures for drastic situations.
¿What do you think of their response to your call?: The lady was very polite and explained the situation as best as she could. However i don\'t think my discussion will be taken into account. Aurélie Pringolliet (France)
