- I
called the embassy and left a message rambling on about deforestation
....on the answer machine. The message said "IT'S A PUBLIC
HOLIDAY" (for who? Argentina? because it wasn't in the UK....
and why are they cutting dow trees on a public holiday??? I reckon
the answer machine message was wrong....but why? Hmmmmm.

- I
spoke to a secretary. She said that she was not aware of the problem,
Argentina needed to feed it\'s population, Europe was no longer
buying sugar cane fron Argentina and Russia had not paid for it\'s
wheat for quite a while so the country needed money for it\'s
own people. she was very friendly, and told me that Argentina,
had 10 per cent of it\'s nariural area protected by law? i told
her to inquire and visit the greenpeace site on the web ¿What
do you think of their response to your call?: very friendly but
she had just taken shift and was unware of previous calling.
Valérie
Duouis (France)
- They
were very polite and took my name and said they would pass on
my concerns to the relevant people
¿What do you think of their response to your call?: polite
but hard to say what what good it did. Adrian Hughes (UK)
- Who
did you speak to at the embassy or consulate?: Embassy in London

he had 10 calls in last half hour. (This was at 14.00 on 27th)
¿What do you think of their response to your call?: Very
polite, chap actually came from Santiago del Estro & implied
he was quite in favour of the campaign. Rob Button (UK)
- ¿What
did they say?: The receptionist said he had recieved many calls
from other greenpeace supports and that he would take my name
and concerns and pass them on to the Agriculture minister, but
he didn\'t know much about the state of deforestation or what
action would or could taken.
¿What do you think of their response to your call?: not
convinced that my concerns would be passed onto the right person,
and even if they were I doubt they would find there way to Argentina.
Would have more confidance if I were able to e-mail the embassy.
Mark Simpson (UK)
-
I talked to Receptionist. They encouraged me to express my concerns
in writing and provided me an email address. Sara Ehrhardt

and they would pass it on to the president.
¿What do you think of their response to your call?: They
were polite and seemed concerned. Samantha Taylor (France)
- ¿What
did they say?: They asked if I would like/prefer to send an email
rather than speak to him. I explained I just came back from the
International Children\'s Conference on the Environment as my
daughter represented Canada. (United Nations Event) My daughter
& I met children from 73 countries & the number 1 problem
seems to be deforestation. I wish to speak to him about this plight
rather than email. Both Jade & I will both attempt to speak
with him.
¿What do you think of their response to your call?: I hope
we can convince him that we need people in these positions who
are brave enough to stand up & protect the people in Argentina.
We need caring compassionate leaders. I think the issue most likely
will be \'downplayed\' but I will hope to reach him. I\'ve seen
many photos of such deforestation & it is very frightening.

They said that I´ve to be more specific and be more well
documented about the problem and before speaking to the embassy.
¿What do you think of their response to your call?: It
was very rude and he looks like very angry too.I think that he
knows about this problem but the embassy don´t care about
this situation and the objective seams to \"break\"our
action. Catarina Mathay (Portugal)
- What
did they say?: They seemed to know what I was calling about, and
promised to pass my message on.

Unfortunately, as always, it seemed like a brush off. I am sending
my comments via email ... maybe the embassador will eventually
reply as to what the heck is going on over there. In the meantime,
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. Fiona Love (Canada)

¿What did they say?: Should write a letter and they would
forward it to Argentina

did not want anything to have to do with it and get rid of me.
Beatrice Faber (France)
- I
was only able to speak to Veronica on the switchboard :( She said
she is only taking the messages but if I want to speak to someone
about the deforestation going on in Northern Argentina I would
need to send an email. I said, \'Are you sure there is nobody
there that can talk to me about it?\' and she said \'I\'m sorry,
you will need to send an email\'
¿What do you think of their response to your call?: Veronica
was very polite and professional but I think that it is a disgrace.
I should have been able to speak to somebody at the Embassy to

Some of greenpeace activists called before. They collect the number
of people called them for this subject. They are interested in
the subject. I think they will talk to Argentina\'s government.

I was told that the reason why Argentina is considering the destruction
of this area of forest is because there is a huge rush of people
coming into northern Argentina from neighboring countries, who
are ill and starving. One of the main illness is the lack of intestinal
flora which needs to be cured with milk products and this requires
soya to feed the animals producing milk products.
There were some contradictions in her comments but generally i
was told that it was due to the poverty of the area and the mass
people migration into the region. She also said that if Europe
bought their products then their economy would go better and they
wouldn\'t need to have such drastic measures for drastic situations.
¿What do you think of their response to your call?: The
lady was very polite and explained the situation as best as she
could. However i don\'t think my discussion will be taken into
account. Aurélie Pringolliet (France)

a number of calls regarding this issue. She requested that a letter
be faxed to them. Fax # 202 332 3171

would imagine that they would have someone at the embassy that
could field these calls if the Ambassador is out - however, my
call was politely handled. I will write a fax and send this as
well. Penny Westergaard (Hawaii)

atendió una mujer muy enojada. Me dijo "¿Otra
vez por lo mismo? Me mandó a la mierda y me cortó.

las manos por todo. Eduardo Zalloco (Chile)
- The
front desk - who answered the phone. A courteous bi-lingual woman.
¿What did they say?: Very friendly - said that folks are
either leaving messages in the V-Mail box for \"Luis Keckler\"
- she said he is the one who deals with policies in regards to

¿What do you think of their response to your call?: They
were very helpful in facilitating me leaving a message, and they

for Argentina and the entire globe\". Michael J.

about the deforestation in Argentina and he said there was no

Laura Yates (UK)
- "They
said i should email them. I'm not sure whether my email will be
read or not" Lee Dalton (UK)
- "I´ve
talked to somebody who seemed to have prepared answers to Jaguars
phone call. She told me that Argentina had no other choice than
to grow transgenic soya since Europe did not buy any more Argentine
wheat because of the subvention to europeanagricultors. I asked
who was going to make profit of that soya and she told me the
indian will, since they eat this soya. The lady on the phone was

to pretend they cant understand... bad people! " Ian
